We needed to capture the fatherly side of Mufasa.” He added, “Fathers aren’t always majestic, especially with their children. Sometimes being a dad means being a bit silly and goofy. In The Lion King, Mufasa guides his son Simba to discover his role in the great circle of life, and for me, the core of that circle is my own family.”

Born in Arkabutla, Mississippi, and raised on a farm by his grandparents in Jackson, Michigan, Jones faced challenges with a stutter during his childhood. A high school teacher helped him overcome this by encouraging him to recite poetry in front of the class, which ignited his passion for performing. After his service in the Army and graduating from the University of Michigan, Jones made his Broadway debut in 1958. Just two years later, he began his distinguished career with New York City’s famous Shakespeare in the Park.
