On Friday, September 13th, 2024, Michaela DePrince death was announced on her official Instagram account. The cause of her passing was not shared.

The Instagram post read, With pain in our hearts, that we announce the death of Michaela Mabinty DePrince, an amazing ballerina whose performances touched many lives and whose spirit inspired so many. Her influence on ballet and beyond will always be remembered.'”

About Michaela DePrince

When Michaela DePrince was very young, she lost her parents. Her original name was Mabinty Bangura. An American couple, Elaine and Charles DePrince, adopted her. They took her from a war-torn Sierra Leone to Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Michaela’s father was killed by rebels, and her mother died from fever and starvation. As a child, Michaela also had a skin condition called vitiligo.

DePrince’s story began when she saw a magazine cover with a ballerina on it while she was a child in Sierra Leone. After moving to America, her parents noticed her talent for ballet and signed her up for classes. She trained at the Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia and gained fame after appearing in the ballet documentary, First Position.

DePrince got a scholarship to study at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Ballet after doing well at the Youth America Grand Prix. When she passed away, she was dancing with the Boston Ballet. She had also danced with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, where she was the youngest dancer ever at 17 years old. She also performed on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

 

Her death caused many people around the world to express their sadness and share their memories of her.

 

Her Relationship.

Michaela DePrince was not married. In 2015, she was reported to be dating ballet dancer Skyler Maxey-Wert, who she also mentioned in her book. It’s not clear if they were still together at the time of her passing.

Skyler Maxey-Wert, born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is an American ballet dancer and singer/songwriter. He began dancing at age 5 at the Lancaster School of Ballet. His performances include roles in The Nutcracker with the Lancaster School of Ballet/The Donetsk Ballet, the Danbury Music Center, and ABT. He has also participated in Daniel Ulbricht’s Dancing Against Cancer Gala and Nicole Javanna Johnson’s Grant’s Safari.

In July 2013, Michaela DePrince and Skyler Maxey-Wert visited the Irene Diamond Summer Institute, where they performed and conducted a Q&A session with the students.
